DESCRIPTION

To fully appreciate this world famous gem of pure medieval style urban planning it is best to enter the city from below from the large Porta Consolare door from the Triumviral Augustan age. On the way up there is the 14th century Cappella Tega with the Cappella Baglioni adorned with frescoes painted by Pinturicchio. Another evocative entrace is the Porta Venere door from the Augustan age with the two Properzio Towers that loom overhead. Leaving the city going towards Assisi there is the imposing Villa Fidelia a hisoric residence that makes a dramatic visual impact with a large italian style garden. Going up the slopes of the surrounding Mount Subasio there are two little towns worth visiting that haven't changed since the Middle Ages Collepino and San Giovanni popular destinations for tours and hikes. On the day celebrating the Corpus Domini Spello is famous for the sacred images that are created using minced flower petals and leaves that are placed directly onto the streets. The large pieces must be at least 24 square metre in size and the rugs are no smaller than 12 linear metres. Only the artist under the age of 14 can produce the smallest rugs. Everyone begins working on Saturday afternoon before the religious holiday and continues on throughout the night until 8 o'clock the following morning. A unique night livened by thousands of people continuously passing through the narrow little streets to watch the hundreds of meticulous and hard working volunteer designers and capitori that after dividing hundreds of plant and floral essences into chromatic tables delicately position them in order to faihfully reproduce the various blocks of colours as dictated by the design. The designs are created by artists of national and international fame a testimonial to the attraction and fame that the manifestation has gained considered the most important event of its kind in Italy. Each year a special panel of judges awards the best creation.
